How to Talk to an AI Therapist: Your First Session Guide

Opening up — even to an AI — can feel awkward at first. You might wonder what to say, whether it will understand you, or if you are "doing it right." There is no perfect script. But there are practices that help you get genuine value from your first session and every session after.

Before you start: set a micro-intention

You do not need a full life story prepared. Pick one small intention: "I want to process today's stress," "I want to understand why I felt anxious in that meeting," or "I just need to vent without burdening anyone." A clear intention gives the session shape without forcing a conclusion.

Choose the right session mode

TheraMind offers different modes because different emotional states need different responses. Choosing the right one is the single highest-leverage decision you can make.

  • Vent — You need to release emotion without analysis. Say what you cannot say to anyone else.
  • Explore — You are curious about a pattern but do not have a specific problem to solve.
  • Work through — You have a concrete challenge: a conflict, decision, or recurring situation.
  • Technique — You want to practice a specific CBT skill like a thought record or grounding.
  • Quick check-in — You have five minutes and want to name how you are doing today.

What to actually say (examples)

Specificity helps more than eloquence. Compare "I had a bad day" with "My colleague questioned my work in front of the team and I have been replaying it for three hours." The second gives your AI therapist something to work with.

You can start with: "I am not sure where to begin, but here is what has been weighing on me…" or "I feel [emotion] and I think it started when [situation]." Honest imperfection is more useful than polished summary.

What to expect — and what not to

Expect reflective questions, not instant solutions. A good AI therapist asks what a skilled clinician asks: "What was going through your mind?" "What would you tell a friend?" "What is the evidence for and against that thought?"

Do not expect diagnosis, medication advice, or emergency intervention. If you express thoughts of self-harm, TheraMind will respond with a brief safety message and end the session. Please contact a licensed mental health professional or emergency services if you are in danger.

After your session

Review your session summary if one is offered. Complete any homework suggestion — even a small one. Log your mood. These post-session actions are where skill-building happens; the conversation itself is only the starting point.

If the session felt helpful, schedule a rough time for your next one. Consistency matters more than length. Three 10-minute sessions per week beats one hour-long session monthly.
