Feeling Overwhelmed: What to Do
Feeling overwhelmed usually means everything seems to need you at once, and your mind cannot settle on any of it. The NHS lists feeling overwhelmed as a common sign of stress, alongside trouble concentrating, struggling to make decisions and constant worry. The aim is not to fix everything today, but to get from "too much" to "one next thing".
What to do when you are feeling overwhelmed
- Steady your body first: a few slow breaths, or name five things you can see
- Write everything down: every task, worry and deadline, in any order
- Circle what is truly urgent today; most things are not
- Pick one small next step and do only that
- Cross off or postpone what can wait, and ask for help with what can be shared
- Let go of what you cannot change for now, and come back to the list tomorrow
Why small targets work
NHS advice on stress is not to try to do everything at once, but to set small targets you can easily achieve, and to focus your energy on what you can change. Finishing one small thing gives your mind a break from the whole list and some proof that progress is possible.
Looking after the basics
When you are overwhelmed, sleep, food, movement and time with people are often the first things to go, which makes everything harder. A short walk, a proper meal or a call with a friend can feel like time you do not have, but they are part of coping, not a distraction from it. Try not to rely on alcohol, cigarettes, gambling or drugs to cope.
When to get help
If you feel overwhelmed most days, the things you try are not helping, or you have had a low mood for more than two weeks, talk to a doctor or a licensed mental health professional. If you feel you cannot keep yourself safe, contact a crisis line or emergency services now.
